(But first, here’s another secret-not-a-secret: This first week the new second edition will be deeply discounted on Amazon! So after you see all of the great new features, please click here to get your new copy on sale! And pretty please, take a few seconds to post a review on Amazon!)

What's new in Good Pictures Bad Pictures: Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids second edition?

#1. It provides even stronger arguments that porn is bad for you! This is the thing . . . addiction to pornography is only one of the devastating potential harms to people who view it. However, this is a book for young kids and they have more concrete thinking, so explaining addiction is the best way to help them see that porn is bad for them.

However, porn also hurts people by teaching their brains to objectify others. And can you think of anything worse? When we objectify people we dehumanize them, and that makes it easier to be mean to them and hurt them. So I added these concepts to Chapter 1 to show that porn hurts people in at least 3 ways:

  1. “First, pornography teaches that a person’s body is an object to use instead of a whole person who deserves to be loved and respected.” (BTW, that one sentence was rewritten umpteen times!) “When people see others as objects, it’s a lot easier to treat them badly, isn’t it?”
  2. “[Pornography] teaches lies! Pornography shows men being mean to women and acting like it’s fun.”
  3. “The third way pornography can hurt a person’s brain is that looking at it can become a bad habit or even a serious addiction.”

#2. "Let's Talk!" discussion questions now strengthen each chapter. This is a big deal and something readers have been requesting for years. And you know the reason why -- learning is always expanded and increased when you think about what you’re hearing or reading. And even more when you talk about it with someone else! My hope is that these questions at the end of each chapter will prepare kids even better for rejecting pornography because they’ve internalized the concepts at a much deeper level. It really helps kids deepen their understanding so they’ll be even more prepared to reject pornography.

(Teacher backstory-- I have a dear friend who taught elementary school for decades. She has a natural intuition about kids and how to teach them! So I asked her to help me develop these “Let’s Talk!” questions. In fact, one day we took ourselves to lunch and worked on them for hours as we gazed out the window at the beautiful Columbia River that flows through our town. But she wouldn’t let me put her name in the Thank You section in the book! I still want to acknowledge her great contribution, along with several others who gave me great feedback and helped to make these questions even more engaging for kids.)

#3. The most up-to-date science provides kids with even more reasons to reject pornography. Exciting new research has been published since 2014 when I put out the first edition. So I went through all 7000 words and updated a few parts with new facts stated more . . . factually! I also reached out to people who are much smarter than me and confirmed that what I had already written was true.

#4. All new completely re-written Tips for Parents and Caregivers. It’s been over four years since I published the first edition, and in that time I’ve learned a lot! This brief section at the back of the book offers five of my most practical tips for raising porn-proof kids in the digital age. It’s an ongoing battle, but you’ve got a much better chance of winning the war when you’re empowered with the right info!

#5. Our updated cover portrays the reality of how many kids are exposed to pornography -- on mobile devices! Tablets, iPads, and smartphones are all way more popular portals to the internet than the trusty old laptop.

(Fun backstory-- my illustrator, Debbie Fox, is currently over in TAHITI overseeing missionary work with her husband. They back in June of 2017 for 3 years! I knew she wouldn’t have much time for painting . . . so before she left I asked her to paint a new picture for a future second edition cover. And then our amazing book designer, Evan McDonald, did some wizardry with his digital design magic wand and poof -- we have a new cover!)

The design inside the book is totally new and more reader-friendly. Evan had fun updating the interior design and improving the typography -- whatever the heck that is! OK, I kinda know what that means -- he changed the way the text is laid out on the page so that it doesn’t seem like so much text. Yes, it actually takes almost 7000 words to define pornography in an age-appropriate way, explain the brain science of addiction and give kids an escape plan! But now all of those words don’t seem so daunting! Go Evan!

(Plus all that stuff that was in the front is now -- mostly -- shifted to the back so you can get right into the story!)

So that’s it! I’m so excited that this new, improved Good Pictures Bad Pictures is now available to help you more effectively teach kids to reject pornography and all of it’s devastating harms!

For all our friends in Canada - the new edition isn't available yet but will be soon!

Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids

"I really like the no-shame approach the author takes. It's so much more than just 'don't watch or look at porn.' It gave my children a real understanding about the brain and its natural response to pornography, how it can affect you if you look at it, and how to be prepared when you do come across it (since, let's face it... it's gonna happen at some point)." -Amazon Review by D.O.
